Outlaw King, “starring Chris Pine, made history by opening one of the world’s great film festivals.” We chose the best movie we could find to be up to what we wanted, “said the event director.

An original Netflix production, “Outlaw King,” opened the Toronto International Film Festival on Thursday, a few months after the online broadcast platform boycotted the Cannes Film Festival. It is the first time that a production of a platform like Netflix is presented at the opening of one of the great film festivals of the world.

The movie, “Outlaw King,” screened as a world premiere in Toronto, will not be screened later in theaters, but will be reserved for Netflix subscribers, who will be able to watch it on November 9.

Netflix had boycotted the 2018 Cannes Film Festival, whose organizers require that the selected films respect a particularity: a mandatory three-year period between screening in theaters and broadcasting on a subscription-based video platform.

“We chose the best movie we could find to live up to what we wanted for the opening night,” said Cameron Bailey, director of the Toronto festival.
